2007 Severe Weather Season

Observations of Severe Storms and Interesting Weather Phenomena

October 18, 2007, Greenville to Neoga, IL - I manage to keep up with a fast-moving supercell, seeing a spectacular wall cloud and rainfoot backlit by the setting sun, as the storm produces golfball hail and wind damage, generating several tornado warnings. Report with photos, video captures, and radar loops here

August 24, 2007, Madison County, IL - I watch a severe storm and catch a close cloud-to-ground lighting strike in Bethalto, then see the effects of the outflow winds as I move east to keep up with the fast-moving storm. Report with photos and video here.

August 5, 2007, Santa Fe, NM Lightning - I observe and photograph a spectacular evening lightning display as a monsoon storm approaches Santa Fe. Report and photos here.

June 7, 2007, Carroll County, Missouri - I watch two intense supercells less than an hour apart, from nearly the same spot, seeing a possible tornado with the first one and a menacing HP-supercell wall cloud with the second. Both storms produce 80 mph wind and hail 2 inches in diameter or larger. Full report here, with photos, video, and radar images.

June 1, 2007, Illinois - A storm in Bureau County, IL produces a weakly-rotating wall cloud as it goes SVR warned. Then, on the way back to Edwardsville, I get nice pics of rainbows, storm clouds at sunset, and a spectacular lightning display. Full report with photos and radar images here

May 11, 2007, New Mexico"Thunderslush" - A storm in the Jemez Mountains and Valles Caldera in NM produces brief heavy rain, frequent CG lightning, and some big, slushy snowflakes. Report and pictures here. (I guess I could have put this in the "winter" section, but since it occured in May and involved thunder, I decided to put it here.)

Two days of Storm Observation in Oklahoma and Kansas:

May 6, 2007, Western Oklahoma - I get video of a rotating wall cloud and catch a funnel or two on a tornado-warned storm near Woodward, OK. Full report with photos, video of the rotating wall cloud, and radar images here.

May 5, 2007, NW Oklahoma and SW Kansas - Two supercells cross from Harper Co., OK into Kansas. After dark, a spectacular display of anvil-crawler lightning. Full report with photos, video of the lightning, and radar images here.

Two days of Storm Observation in 3 States:

April 25, 2007, SE Kansas, NE Oklahoma, SW Missouri - A cold-core setup produces a low-topped supercell and other interesting and photogenic storms. Full report with many photos here.

April 24, 2007, northeast Kansas bust - I see nothing of interest on a day that started out promsing, but in which only one storm in Kansas produced tornadoes - and I was too far away to get to it.

April 11, 2007, near Terre Haute, IN - I get video of a rapidly-rotating wall cloud as a low-topped supercell goes TOR-warned east of Terre Haute, IN. Full report with video, photos, radar image, and local storm reports here.
