Night-time Branched Lightning, Santa Fe, NM, July 14, 2022

by John Farley

I got some nice branched lightning in Santa Fe, NM the evening of July 14. This lightning was from a line of storms that seemed to develop on an outflow boundary from earlier storms a little farther east. These storms formed over the western part of the city, developed into a line, and drifted slowly to the west or WNW. Eventually they reached the Los Alamos area. The storms produced around .3" of rainfall northwest of Santa Fe and spotty amounts of up to a half inch in the Los Alamos area. These pictures were taken from Santa Fe, looking west or WNW.
